PORTSALON, dating back to 1891, deserving of its fine reputation as a true links in the old style. Stretching along Portsalon beach on the shores of Lough Swilly and protected from north and west winds by the majestic mountains of Donegal are those narrow undulating fairways winding through deep dunes. Soft sand bunkers, large natural greens and meandering streams offer the golfer testing and enjoyable golf on a links steeped in history. Portsalon is one of those little known gems found in north Donegal, friendly and informal with stunnign views to mellow the most ardent golfer. You will wonder then, why there are no crowded fairways or difficulty arranging tee times and why green fees are so very, very reasonable. After he was knighted, he built the first town and lived in the O'Donnell castle for a short time. He built a fort on the Lough Swilly shore and the first Reformation church, which still stands. He brought in families from Scotland to live in the new town. The Stewards continued as resident landlords into the 20st century. During the time of political and religious unrest, "The Father of Presbyterianism", Francis Makemie, was born in Ramelton and worshipped in what is now called "The Old Meeting House".
